UPIK®: VDA, VCI and D&B

How does D&B contribute to the UPIK® project?
D&B Germany developed the UPIK® online platform in coordination with UPIK® partners. Using the platform, business partner information can be stored and updated free of charge.

A reliable and standardized source of information for reaching business decisions is provided within the scope of the UPIK® program thanks to the world's largest company database from D&B.

How do I become a UPIK® partner?
Only members of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (Verband der Automobilindustrie, VDA) and the German Chemical Industry Association (Verband der Chemischen Industrie, VCI) can become UPIK® partners. For additional information, please contact these associations.

How does D&B support business processes in the automobile and chemical industries?
D&B collects information on an entire company while also differentiating between individual company divisions where actual transactions take place (such as orders, call-off orders, documentation exchange, etc.). Various D&B D-U-N-S® Numbers can thus be allocated to various divisions of a company located at the same physical address. This is presently only possible for a limited number* of countries, but is continually being expanded by UPIK® and D&B.

* In this connection please see UPIK® Knowledge Base: Appendix: Country List for Company Divisions

What is D&B Germanys definition of a business division?
Business divisions are large, complex, and self-enclosed areas or units of a company which do not possess an independent legal status. They have a specific area of activity and exist over a long time period. In addition, they possess a managing director and unique contact information.

Who determines whether or not a business division requires its own D&B D-U-N-S® Number?
Companies decide for themselves if they want to request a unique D&B D-U-N-S® Number for a given business division. A D&B D-U-N-S® Number will be allocated to the division if all formal requirements are fulfilled.

How can one differentiate between business divisions in the D&B database?
Divisions are differentiated by the D&B D-U-N-S® Number in addition to the division name which appears supplementary to the company name.

UPIK® Search

How does UPIK® Search work?
As soon as you enter a D&B D-U-N-S® Number, a check is conducted to see if this number has been allocated to a company in the global D&B database and whether or not this company is active.

If search parameters are entered, the global D&B database is searched for companies according to the entered criteria. When more criteria are entered, the search results are more precise. A maximum of 100 results will be displayed.

At what point is a D&B D-U-N-S® Number no longer considered active?
Companies do not possess an active D&B D-U-N-S® Number if they do not conduct active business operations if, for example, a company is deregistered, deleted from the commercial register, or if insolvency proceedings are refused by the courts due to lack of sufficient assets. A D&B D-U-N-S® Number may also be considered inactive if a company is relocated internationally, merges with another company, or is restructured. Companies without an active D&B D-U-N-S® Number are not displayed in UPIK®.

Why are no search results shown?
